Fans of Brothers & Sisters cater waiter Scotty were heartbroken when Scotty exited the show less than halfway through the first season. After all, he had been the one to challenge Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) to loosen up his buttons and live life as a gay man a little more freely. And it was with Scotty that Kevin shared that first kiss that told gay viewers Brothers & Sisters was going to be much more than another drama chastely portraying a gay couple’s neutered relationship.

As written by B&S creator Jon Robin Baitz and acted by Macfarlane, Scotty is unabashedly gay, proud of who he is, and feisty when backed into a corner. After he left the show, fans pined for his return, finding Kevin’s subsequent relationships with Chad Barry (Jason Lewis) and Jason McCallister (Eric Winter) to lack the same chemistry.

Indeed, some started referring to Scotty as Kevin’s "Mr. Big" (referencing Carrie Bradshaw’s on again/off again relationship on Sex and the City) in hopes that Scotty might return. Scotty has indeed returned to B&S and just last week found himself again dating Kevin, setting up a possible love triangle with Kevin and his most recent boyfriend Jason McCallister (Eric Winter), yet another way B&S is breaking ground in portraying gay relationships on broadcast TV.

Brothers & Sisters: Scotty vs Jason

Raise your hand if you saw last night's Brothers & Sisters plot twist coming! (If you read my BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! column and figured out my asterisk quiz, then you did know.)

Last night's episode still revolved a great deal around Kitty's upcoming wedding, but Kevin's (Matthew Rhys) long simmering frustration with boyfriend Jason (Eric Winter) who is off in Malaysia and not bothering to call home (except to his brother) finally came to a head last night when Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) brought home some cater waiter leftovers including lobster and champagne. He might as well have just walked into Kevin's apartment, stripped off his clothes and pounced on him!

After eating their sumptuous, suggestive meal the two fell asleep together on the couch.

Upon waking, Scotty clearly realized there was something in the air and tried to get Kevin to go to bed while he inflated his air mattress. Kevin agreed and rose to exit stage left, but before he even got halfway up, spun around and he and Scotty lunged for each other.

The two parted awkwardly the next morning and, of course, Jason finally called that very afternoon. We see the start of the conversation, then Kevin closes the door and the scene cuts away. When Kevin arrives home it's to find Scotty packing up to leave, apparently uninterested in either being Kevin's plaything or being a constant reminder that Kevin cheated on Jason.

But before Scotty can go, Kevin tells him he broke up with Jason and that he wants to give this thing with Scotty another go. Hmm....

While I'm certainly glad to have yet another guy-guy kiss on the show and Kevin's storyline picking up steam again, I'm not quite so sure what I think about it unfolding this way. (And having seen next week's ep already, I know a bit more about where things head next!) Is Kevin an ass for so quickly cheating on Jason? Or is Jason's lack of communication a sign he is more in love with God than Kevin as Kevin seems to fear?

We do know Jason is going to be back soon, presumably either to fight for his man or thump him with the good book.

What does everyone think of this latest plot development? Is Kevin an impatient, idiot for trashing yet another relationship? Or is he justified in dumping Jason because he's realized he still has feelings for Scotty?

Eric Winter to Return to 'Brothers & Sisters'

It has only been a few weeks since CBS' disastrous musical drama, Viva Laughlin, was taken off the air, but series actor Eric Winter is already set to return to the small screen.

According to TV Guide's Michael Aussielo, Winter is gearing up to tape scenes for the 11th episode of ABC's Brothers & Sisters.  The 31-year-old actor is reprising his role as Jason McCallister, the brother of Senator Robert McCallister (Rob Lowe) who becomes romantically involved with lawyer Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys).

"He's coming back for a few episodes — for now," executive producer Greg Berlanti told TV Guide while at the writers' strike on Tuesday.

When viewers last saw Eric Winter's Jason on Brothers & Sisters, he, an ordained minister, left for Malaysia to serve as a missionary for poverty-stricken people.  In his absence, Rhys' Kevin found himself struggling to remain monogamous, especially when his ex-boyfriend, Scotty Wandell (Luke MacFarlane), re-entered the picture.

While Eric Winter's return to Brothers & Sisters signals a new love triangle, Ausiello said that by the end of the episode, aptly entitled “Missionary Imposition,” fans will know “where Kevin's loyalty lies.”

While Winter's comeback may give viewers the impression that the strike is not affecting ABC's Brothers & Sisters, reality says otherwise.  As of this time, the show only has two episodes left to film, with Winter returning to the set a week from Thursday.

Moreover, the highly anticipated eight-episode arc of Emmy nominee Danny Glover on the show may be cut short due to the strike, which the 61-year-old actor fully supports.

Glover, who plays an advisor hired by Kitty (Calista Flockhart) to help Robert's campaign, told TV Guide last week that he has only filmed three of his eight episodes.  He also said that since he has not worked on television for a long time, he doesn't “know how it works, with rewrites.  There seem to be a lot of rewrites.  But I don't know how it works.”

Although Glover has only shot a few of his episodes on Brothers & Sisters, it is clear that his character has grown on him.

"I like his sensibility.  He's funny, he's witty, he's basically a good guy," he said.

Scotty (Luke MacFarlane) returns to Brothers & Sisters

Good news for fans of Luke MacFarlane! As you've probably heard by now, the handsome actor will be making a return appearance on Brother & Sisters early in season two. (His character, Scotty Wandell, was gay brother Kevin Walker's first on screen love, and he's a big favorite among gay fans. Myself included.)
ABC has just released publicity stills of the new season's third episode (to air Sunday, October 14th), and a disproportionate amount of them seem to be of Scotty. I guess ABC knows what/who us gay boys wanna see. Looks like when Kevin (Matthew Rhys) catches up with him, the two share an impromptu dinner in an industrial kitchen. Either Scotty's still doing that cater-waiter gig, or they stumbled onto the set of Top Chef. Or maybe Versatile Chef? Who knows.

Just got back a little while ago from San Antonio Winery in Los Angeles where a party celebrating the release of the first season of "Brothers & Sisters" on DVD. Wanted to sit right down and share with you my conversation with Matthew Rhys, the handsome Welsh actor who plays Kevin Walker on what is my favorite show.

Greg: Which episode from the first season is your favorite?
Matthew: "To me, it's the road trip [Episode 9: "Mistakes Were Made, Part 2]. I don't know if it's because I watch it and look back and remember how much I laughed or how much I laugh when I actually watch it - especially Rachel Griffiths in the bar playing pool and laughing. That episode seems to be quite real in the relationships. It's a road trip and you're forced into certain situations and as a result of that you get some great conflict."
Greg: OK, now what about this season? Have you had any scenes with Scotty (Luke MacFarlane) yet?
Matthew: Yes I have. Dear Luke MacFarlane. It's fantastic having him back foir every reason. Primarily because he's such a good actor but everything else that goes with it."
Greg: So what's going on between Kevin and Scotty?
Matthew: Well that's the thing, we don't know. We are literally on a need to know basis. I'm still waiting to see. We've just met [up again] at the moment and are still very platonic - at the moment."
Greg: Have you had any scenes with the senator's brothers [xxx xxxx]?
Matthew: Yes, I have.
Greg: Have you locked lips with anyone yet?
Matthew: I have. Well, I did with the senator's brother at the end of last season. [Kevin] was drunk. The first time we actually shot that, Ken Olin yelled 'Cut! It's like you're wrestling.' So it wasn't the greatest of starts for me and Eric."
Greg: Scotty would never wrestle with you.
Matthew. Nooooo. He's very sensitive.
Greg: So is Kevin going to get a little smarter about relationships this season?
Matthew: "I think there are external influences that challenge that. It's not necessarily his immaturity but other reasons that are out of his power.
Greg: The show has a lot of fans, you have a lot of fans. A lot of the gay viewers love your portrayal of Kevin Walker who I think is the best-written gay character on television.
Matthew: "I have had a fantastic reaction from the gay community which is so heartening.The creative and writing team set out to make [Kevin's sexuality] an issue without making an issue out of it and I think they succeeded."
Greg: OK, last question. Are you gonna take Uncle Saul out to a gay bar or anything?
Matthew: [laughs] I sincerely hope so! I think the mileage that could be had from that experience would be too good to pass up."

I'd like to think that this blog is above doing more than one post in a single day about actors Wentworth Miller ("Prison Break") and Luke MacFarlane ("Brothers & Sisters" hanging out together.
Yeah, I'd LIKE to think so.
JustJared.com has posted the details of their outing and I, realizing there is interest, want to share those details with you. It's pretty SCANDALOUS: According to spywitnesses, the pair first avoided being photographed together, but eventually walked down the street together with a smile. Their day off together began with a visit to Kinkos where Wentworth surfed the web. Next stop: Starbucks. They then headed to a small art gallery in Culver City. And before calling it a day, they hit the In-N-Out Burger drive-thru.
No idea if they ordered a double-double, animal style.

Luke MacFarlane Steps Out with Wentworth Miller

Wentworth Miller hangs out actor pal Luke MacFarlane in Los Angeles on Saturday.

According to spywitnesses, the pair first avoided being photographed together, but eventually walked down the street together with a smile.

Wentworth, 35, and Luke, 27, started their day off together by visiting printing store Kinko’s, where the Prison Breakstar surfed the web.

Afterwards the pair grabbed some drinks from Starbucks and headed to a small art gallery in Culver City. Finally, Wentand Luke went to the In-N-Out Burger drive-thru and called it a day.

MacFarlane is the ex-boyfriend of Grey’s Anatomy star TR Knight.

TCA Update: Brothers & Sisters Scoop!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit the Brothers & Sisters set where I chatted with Matthew Rhys who plays Kevin Walker, Ron Rifkin who plays Uncle Saul, and the show's executive producer Jon Robin Baitz. Friday's BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! will have all the details, but right now I thought I'd share some news Baitz revealed during the set visit. We'd already heard that Kevin's first love interest on the show -- Scotty Wandell played by Luke MacFarlane -- would be back for an episode. But for all you Scotty lovers I have good great news -- Scotty will be back for seven episodes and Baitz told me a little more about the character. Here is everything I learned about Luke, plus a few other details.

• The show returns Sundays at 10 PM starting September 30.
• Eric Winters is only back for one episode, but that could change. He was actually on the set during the visit though I didn't have time to chat with him. I'm happy to report he is just as handsome in person as on TV. (And Matthew Rhys is better looking in real life. TV just doesn't do him justice!)
• When asked if Kevin and Scotty would get back together, Baitz said: "We're really interested in exploring what it could mean for these two characters to get to know each other even more than they have. Not just romantically, but truly as friends; as people who can talk to each other. So you're going to see that storyline evolve surprisingly. I don't want to tell too much. I think having him back is such a delight. Where we find him when we come back is a man trying to pull his life together and I take really special care with those characters -- Kevin and Scotty."
• When asked about whether Luke was back because of fan reaction and his chemistry with Matthew: "I always knew that it was extraordinary and they freedom they had is why it is working so well and they're such great strong actors. Everyone agreed. The studio. The network. The people who loved the show -- so it was a given."

Bad news Scotty Fans

For those who are big fans of Luke MacFarlane aka Brothers & Sisters' Scotty aka as the real love of Kevin's (Matthew Rhys) life who got replaced by that loser Chad (Jason Lewis), I have good news and bad news. The good news is that Luke might be coming back to your TV screens soon. The bad news is it likely won't be as Scotty snogging Kevin.

Luke has been added to the cast of FOX's new court drama Supreme Courtships. (One of the Flying Monkeys choked on his banana when he heard that lame name.) That's Luke on the right doing the very butch "hands-on-the-hips-I-mean-business" pose. According to Luke's stalker biggest fan, AE regular Kong Chang, Luke will be playing Allan, a conservative character no doubt working for one of the conservative Supreme Court Justices. Of course, if this is "conservative" in the way that Rob Lowe's Senator is conservative, then the Justice will probably actually be a member of the ACLU, support same-sex marriage, be a vegan and want to raise taxes.
But I digress.
I hope Luke finds success in whatever shape or form, but I admit I'd rather see him on B&S than playing a conservative on a FOX drama. I'm just saying.
